Hi Lawson,

For your original quest an annotating workspace I am wondering about the following story.

Two morphs side by side. One a workspace. The other a drawing space.
The background for the workspace is the image of the drawing space. 
The background for the drawing space is the text of the workspace.

So you can type and draw directly on the workspace.
You can annotate directly on the drawing space. 
Except for what overlaps what, the two spaces would look the same.

That should do your trick without buttons even.

I think this might be easier to hack than anything else I've though of along those lines.

Now to see is squeak will let me program something close to the story.
