OK, I stopped a bit too soon.  It seems that is probably a problem with
the shell script that is actually pointed at by that link.  So I tried
the VM directly

kencausey at box2:~/projects/coglinux/lib/squeak/4.0-2550$ ./squeak
-version
Floating point exception

A classic VM runs just fine without any special environment setup by a
shell script.  Either the CogVM needs some or my guess about library
mismatch is correct.
