Good news:

root at box3-squeak:~# df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/xvda1             60G  673M   56G   2% /

I gave Brad access and after he found some docs on the Gandi site
regarding using resize2fs he decided to just try it (after checking with
me that we had nothing to lose) and it worked.
