The single-quote thing is planned, btw ... didn't know this wasn't valid HTML.

Reason ... many javascript & JSP things require double quotes, and you cannot have double quote within double quotes without screwing up readability, so we tend to use single quotes for attributes and double quotes for actual "Strings", etc.

Can you find the part of the spec that says single quotes aren't allowed.  This is genuine news to me.

As for the validator, that's a large task.  We did it in 2003 before XHTML.  I'm sure you'd find MANY websites that fail magnificantly according to W3C, and I'm sure you'd find sites that didn't appear correctly (especially on IE) that did validate.
