I use to extract .pot file and translated .po files in a SVN repository (see http://wiki.laptop.org/go/DrGeo). I will keep doing that way. 
Original DrGeo source code is hosted in http://www.squeaksource.com/DrGeoII
However, loading the .pot file in Pootle could present some advantage as well to ease translation.
If Sugar Pootle server is in heavy load, OFSET can help a bit with its Pootle server (http://pootle.ofset.org)
