Version 3 of the fileout follows Bert's advice:
(a) Don't use the 'format:' construct for the message after all.
(b) Run the stream-name through 'translated' in the test to decide whether or not we're in the degenerate case.

As Bert suggests, perhaps we want to suppress the progress informer in general.
