I consider this to be the best available alternative in the circumstances.  It completely solves the problem from a user's point of view, entails minimal risk of introducing other problems, and requires neither rearchictecting nor a lot of code.  I first thought of it as a workaround, but eventually realized that any more "real fix" would in effect end up reinventing a variant of parentheses structure anyway.

If people are unhappy with this, the other alternatives I see are:
  (1)  Leave things they way they been (present for 2 years without any complaints until last week)
  (2)  Remove the bearing-to and distance-to features from etoys (throw-out-baby-with-bathwater)
