Would suggest when you add a vertex ("at cursor" or "at beginning") it is placed between the current vertex cursor (or beginning vertex) and the next vertex.
Also set the vertex cursor to the newly created vertex (which changes its color to blue) and makes it visible.

Its challenging enough making the invisible visible, lets not add to those issues ;)
