If you turn the "unlimitedPaintArea" preference on, you get exactly the bevavior suggested in this ticket, for all paintings.  In some earlier versions of etoys, we did have this preference set on, but this turned out to have downsides, not least of which was that injudicious or unlucky use of the "fill" tool would quickly make an individual little "sketch" suddenly fill the screen, in a manner that can make subsequent work in the project very problematical.
