There are two methods to "display a grid" on a playfield, one is using playfield option "make graph paper", the other is to "turn gridding on".
The "make graph paper" option sets a grid where width=length (ie: you can only specify grid size), so there is no way to display a grid where width!=length except using gridding.  Also I was thinking of a "grid visible" option (indepedent of whether or not you are "gridding"

In any case I think this is a very low priority issue.
