Yep, that sort of works, though IE seems to not want to understand the 
colgroup stuff (so far as I understand it anyway!) and so I get a table 
like
     |o|A| this | that| other|
instead of the
     |oA| this| that| other|
I was hoping to be able to get.
I suppose we can live with it.
