I have to admit to being guilty of the same misuse of <span> myself before
I actually read the spec.  You can see this in, for example,
IABatch>>html.  However, since I often use the s-expression syntax
instead of the html parser, I didn't get caught (btw, if anyone else is
using the s-expr parser, I have a patch that adds paren blinking and
auto-indent to the ParagraphEditor, which is extremely useful).
