Ewww... that's pretty lossy.  Even if UTF-8 only had 8bit characters you 
could lose stuff in the round trip.  Obviously there isn't really a 
better solution until we get Yoshiki's UTF stuff into the image (there 
was quite a bit of discussion around this at OOPSLA), but I'm not sure 
I'd recommend that as any kind of solution.
