Thanks for all your help on this.  I think I can combine the two techniques -- external style sheet and style methods -- because the places where I have to calculate widths and heights are not the same places where I add children on the fly.  So I'll use the external style sheet for most of the styles, and style methods to override (or, in fact, add to) those styles in a few places.
