Was it Gene Amdahl who suggested that a 'balanced' machine should be able to
clear its memory in one second and dump it to disk in ten? From which the
law of 1 MIPS / 1 Mbyte / 1 Mbit/s IO follows. Current boxes are invariably
processor-heavy; great for Quake, with its graphics bias and finely-honed
inner loops that are designed to fit in cache, less good for general
computing.
Tim --- if you can get that mythical system of yours FCC-compliant, I'll
have one. Shame it'll be 50 kg due to the mu-metal screen around the damned
thing...
