One technique often overlooked is using MessageTally. From the World menu select debug menu... then start MessageTally. After answering yes, MessageTally will collect data on what's happening until the cursor hits the top of the screen. So, start one and then do some of the things that seem slow. Move the mouse to the top of the screen and you will get a nice report of what was happening.
