Yes, there was a great little hardware/software enhancement to the  
Apple II+ that used the fact that the color coding actually also  
positioned the pixels differently and a software controlled  
video-mixer ( VSYNC to game-paddle input pin ) to achieve 560x192  
resolution.  Another somewhat more complicated hardware enhancement  
added another bit of memory to get 1120x192.  Bizarre but cool... :-)
