What does it mean, if anything, to have a variableWordSubclass with an instance variable?  

Presently, Squeak permits one to construct such a creature, and to instantiate it.  However, references to one of the instance variables makes both my Mac and PC versions die a terrible and ugly death.  If these things were never made to be, perhaps their creation should be precluded?  If they were meant to be, but their instance members untouched, perhaps Squeak should do something other than merely dump core?
