I think it was Kent Beck who codified this as

	First, make it work.
	Then make it work right.
	Finally, make it work right fast.

and Dan Ingalls who suggested that one should

	Do the simplest thing which could possibly work.

If I could manage to remember these bits of wisdom in the heat of coding I
suspect I'd save lots of time.  <sigh>
