Umm, this issue was marked pending ;)

In the past there was a lot of trouble with patent issues, however we're
close to enjoying a Free(tm) audio codec, that even seems to outperform
mp3 in the quality/bitrate comparison (see:
http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/index.html or http://www.vorbis.com).

libvorbis (beta) is available as a plug-in for Unix, Windows and BeOS
Players, so I'd think that you wouldn't run into problems with porting.
The clear advantage of OggVorbis over e.g. MPEG1 audio layer 3 (mp3) is
the ability to both listen and create music without paying licensing fees.

DivX is another interesting bit, essentially it seems to be MPEG4 video.
Some info and sourcecode and is available from http://www.opencodex.com.
They've started a contest and are awarding $25K and an iMac DV for the
one who produces the best codec.

Regards, Mark
