Oh - duh, I had lost the context and assumed it was internal stuff

Sounds like the usual problem afflicting unices - it's the same
everywhere except for <insert list almost as long the the OS
sourcecode>. If Linux can do the 'right' thing and others can't maybe it
would be best to live with that? It sounds as if you can provide a
Pareto-efficient solution.
