Under OS-X you have a front end development environment which
hosts/drives the GNU development tools. Right now this only supports
OS-X, but promises have been made for OS8.6/9.x support (someday...)
via OS-X. So migration from MPW with GNU to that environment isn't
difficult. This appears to be the only visible announcement from
Apple on the topic of development tools.
