The file plays fine on my MacOS Flash player, but I can't open it in the
flash editor to check it out (the editor won't open a 'protected file').

Looking at it, however, I would say that it is almost certainly using
features which were not added until Flash 4, where the Squeak flash
player only copes with 3.

In particular, version 4 was the first version to have embedded MP3 for
sound (which, given the file size, I assume this file is using). Also,
some of the text support (especially embedded fonts and alpha blending
IIRC - I don't have the manual in front of me at the moment) is new to
version 4.

If you have the original .fla for this file, try setting your publishing
settings to publish version 3 files and see how much you lose :)
