I eventually had the time to test that system (using 2.8a - #2158).  I 
noticed that with other screen depths than 8, Squeak significantly slows 
down - and I've set 32 bit display resolution in BeOS.  The main problem 
however is that once I press a character like ä or ö - probably anything 
with asciiValue >= 128 - the VM hangs.  That makes it basically unusable 
for me :-(
