Hmm, upon recompilation of the VM I -still- don't get any FFI module listed by 
Smalltalk listLoadedModules.  I watched the configure and build...it did 
recognize and utilize libffi during the compile of the VM.

I think I'm missing a step somewhere...  In addition I couldn't figure out how 
to build the UNIX VM in a modular way (just a big monolithic VM, Profiler.so 
and System.so get built).
