I suppose his custom code might have been Whisker, which does subclass SimpleHierarchicalListMorph.  Or it could be something else. :)

(Actually, his workaround plus one other small change fixes the problem for Whisker in the current 3.1alpha, anyway.  I put a small changeset update Whisker-31alpha-3910update.1.cs on my webspace if anyone is using Whisker with 3.1alpha.)
