Well, Multics when I used it was supposed to be programmed in this nice
small compact and orthogonal language called PL1. Actually, it was a very
pleasant system. 

I think the originals are often more interesting than the copies. eg the
Xerox machines I used at Cambridge were much more interesting than their
Mac descendants.
