Doug,

I think Karl was using a minimal palette (4 bit -- sixteen colors) and would 
be justified for a wide range of bit depths. I think there are only 6 
non-gray scale colors in that pallette. The lighter blue (that's 'cyan' I 
believe) is really quite a bit lighter.
