I had to try making an embedded image recently; with no success
whatsoever. Has anybody been able to actually do this? Windows or Mac?

Looking through the code I have to hand doesn't offer many clues as to
how it is supposed to work in the VM  - for example I can't spot any
places where the VM's image saving code would appear to have anything to
do with saving to anything but a file. And in the image itself the code
does some odd things like asking you to point to a VM (presumably one
that you have copied in orderto embed the image into) and then carefully
strips the filename extension off the name you give it, followed by
looking for that munged name. Of course, you're unlikely to find it if
you are on a machine that uses filename extension. Like Windows for
example....

So, has anybody done the deed?
