On my Acorn, with this and Ned's previous menu related improvement, I
now get an elapsed time of 38sec for the test Andreas proposed instead
of 66; a 40-ish% improvement!

Another few rounds of this and it will be quite usable on Acorns and
iPaqs. Way to go Ned.
