Yes, this sort of thing is why I wrote the MySQL adaptor.

I found ODBC too unreliable. There are so many possible points of 
failure, and so little you can do about it when a failure does occur. 
And getting it installed on OS X was just a nightmare before Apple 
started bundling it in 10.2.

The native-Smalltalk MySQL driver is a little awkward in places, but it 
works pretty well.
