IIRC VW did not use the Sparc tagged instructions because they ended up
not being very useful (in fact I think they used a different tag
scheme?) and the register windows also turned out to be more trouble
than they were worth. I suspect that part of the problem was much to do
with what Jecel pointed out; they analysed C code used in popular
benchmarks, designed a processor to handle that code and then were
surprised when some of the features were not so very useable. Yet
another example of the power of dumb benchmarks to warp the industry.
