Another data point for Göran: I have OSS at the base (I'm waiting for ALSA
to be easy) and KDE's fine artsd takes care of multiplexing. I invoke
non-artsd-aware programs with artsdsp, eg "artsdsp realplay". I haven't
been doing this with squeak but maybe I should.
