large fraction of the problem relates to the complicated state of the
startup process these days. Several plugins are invoked that do not have
functional simulation code to suport them. Can't recall which but I'll
bet Craig has a changelog of the hacks we tried to work around them.
Basically there is simply too much cruft involved in the current image.
