Squeak lockup - possible cause

Andreas,

I *might* have found the cause of my MIDI lockup problem: screen
savers. The backorderd junk arrived in time for some
experimenting last weekend, and the 750 MHz Win98 machine
locked up pretty much the same way as the 200 MHz Win95
machine: Morphic was frozen (it repainted ok, but was non-
responsive to input) and the main window/VM was responsive to
input. In this case though, the screen saver activated, and after
moving the mouse to get back to Squeak, I found it frozen as
described. Disabling the screen saver allowed the MIDI app to run
for hours w/o incident.

The older machine was using a screen saver at one point, but the
wrinkle is that it is currently deactivated. Still, it's possible that I
lost confidence in the app before deactivating the screen saver.
When the lockups occured on the 95 machine, the screen saver
didn't appear; but, I'm assuming that there still could be a
connection. Obviously it would be a good idea to try to reproduce
the problem using a very short timeout on the screen saver.

To make the MIDI interface work, I finally resorted to pulling the
sound card out of the older machine and installed it in the newer
one. Before moving it back or buying another card (haven't
decided), I want to try reproducing the problem and then try some
more extended use with the faster machine.

More later.
