No, absolutely not! Maybe your first port of call should be to
www.squeakland.org where some (IIRC, can never get my head round US grading
system) 8 - 10 year olds have been creating projects. 

Karl Ramberg and Diego Gomez Deck  (amongst others) have both written nice
tutorials using scripting and (relatively) simple objects -- there should be
pointers to them from the Swiki.
