I have fond memories of Dragon Warrior IV.

There are a suite of tools that help make RPGs in this style.  There was
even a PlayStation "game" called "RPG Maker" which helped you create such
things.

Years ago, I created adventure games on a Commodore 64 using a tool called
"Adventure Construction Set."  It was a lot of fun.

I'd love to do the same kind of thing in Squeak, but then again there are
a lot of things I'd love to do in Squeak... :)
