[UPDATES] 3.5gamma

AFAICT, this fix is KCP territory. Unless there is a very good reason
otherwise, I would await their recommendation (and not delay the
release).

PS - the suggestion that this is now what we are calling a "major" bug,
worth delaying a release for, tells me we're either in very good shape,
or people just don't nag enough about the bugs they really care about.
