There is the possibility in the version of Mailman we currently use to
setup 'topics' (AFAIK based on keywords in the subject) and subscribe to
a subset of the topics. That would maybe help people that just want to
see announcements. Does anyone know of a Mailman list where this is
used?

Re web forums: the UI usually is too cumbersome, compared to a mail
client. 

Re number of messages: my MUA can display the messages threaded, so it
is easy for me to pick out the threads I want to follow and dump the
rest.
