That is in fact the choice I made for myself quite a few years ago.  I 
don't use pools *at all* unless somebody else's code forces me to, and I 
have routinely recommended the same for others for quite a few years 
now.   And, I don't think any of your other suggestions for pools would 
get me to change my mind about that.
