I was mistaken about the hybrid thing, reading a little too quickly,
seeing the part about adding buttons, and jumping to conclusions.

Upon further review, I found that I was barking up the wrong tree, and
what I REALLY wanted all along was an on-screen keyboard. This is a
much easier thing to build than handwriting recognition, and not too
bad for me as a user. There are a few of them freely available, and at
least two of them fulfill my desire to have text entry capability
without carrying around a keyboard!! I'm currently using Click-N-Type
to send this note - wirelessly from where I happen to be sitting with
just a tablet and comfortable pen in my hands!!
