I've seen a vaguely similar problem as follows:-
open the 'flaps' menu.
pin it so you can do several things
turn off 'show flaps'
destroy flaps
 - the pin and close widget disappear and the menu becomes much shorter
It can be quite irritating to get rid of the dang thing.
