There are such things.  I don't know the name offhand, but keep
looking...  People use such things in class projects at Georgia Tech
sometimes, to avoid having to design a real file format.

There are also projects to come up with a format that will work between
different Smalltalks.  Again, sorry, I don't know the names offhand.
