I'm just saying that vendors usually say something like "this will be
supported until <some due date>, and people should consider their
transition plans to <new stuff> accordingly". IOW, while leaving one
with fewer actual options than you are, they are much more soothing
about it ;-)

In fact, I don't know. But IIUC, it is part of ANSI. And half the point
of standards is that when you implement the standard, and someone else
can't interoperate, its their fault. 

Though I guess it would be better to find out whether that part of the
standard has caught on before doing the work. Like I said, I personally
think this is of rather little importance, at least right now. 

Stef raised an interesting question - how are Global variable
definitions handled? rare birds, I know, but they do occur in the wild.

I don't see how PI could support them...
