If you press alt-period then the sound loop should stop and you'll get
your CPU back.  :)  But that's not a real solution.  I don't have any
real help to offer.

FWIW, though, I've noticed no such problem with the Network Audio Sound
sound driver.  If you were ever thinking about switching to a sound
server, and you have some spare time, then maybe you have an excuse to
try it.
