Reasonably up to date, though there hasn't been a whole lot of action in
this area.

One might argue, though, that the average newbie will be more interested
in figuring out how things work, and sending in little fixes, and less
in the process of modularizing the image. 

So maybe that reference doesn't fit the intended audience.
