Hmmm, since I am a Swede I use the Swedish characters extensively in
Squeak:

a with a ring: Character value: 140
a with dots: Character value: 138
o with dots: Character value: 154

A with a ring: Character value: 129
A with dots: Character value: 128
O with dots: Character value: 133

Haven't had any problems with them.
