We talk to serial ports, networks, disc drives etc which surely counts
as outside peripherals... I seem to remember people handling Lego RCX
etc as well.

What do you actually need to talk to? If nobody has yet done an
interface I suspect we can help you write a suitable plugin if one is
needed.
