If you do help->vm statistics from the world menu what does it give you?
	
Are you talking about the case which WORKS (showing that there is
plenty of memory) or the cases which DON'T work?  Because in the latter
cases, there is no way to do this at all.  About the only thing that
works in those cases is menubar|File|Quit, and thank goodness that does.
