At the BOF last week I was wondering what you would use the extended
serial support for
besides listening to the wind velocity, but over the weekend I got this
note, I had forgotten about
those 'extra's phones come with nowadays.

Well,

The first attempts were very promising.

After minutes, I had already successfully
  - opened the serial port
  - listed the SMS messages on my Phone
  - send a SMS message to my girlfriend
  - read her answer

all by sending AT commands to the phone.

Trying this in Java took me half a day :-)

Next step will be to write a little app to select the serial port, and
have some gui that shows the received SMS messages, and makes it
possible to send an SMS to some phone number.

It's a pity Squeak crashes frequently on Panther. I hope this will be
resolved soon.

Greetings,

Hein.
